Information of Ya Rayom Lom Soong formula in Thai traditional medicine
• Ingredients This formula consists of various herbs, e.g., Rauwolfia root,
atractylodes rhizome, Szechwan lovage rhizome, licorice, dried ginger, nut grass
rhizome, chebulic myrobalan, emblic myrobalan, etc.
• Dosage and administration: powdered form, use jasmine water or rose water
as vehicle, take 1-2 teaspoonfuls orally before breakfast and dinner, or as
needed.
• Indications: relieve headache, antihypertensive, and sleep aid.
Clinical evidence of antihypertensive effect and side Effects of Rayom
(Rauwolfia root)
Blood pressure lowering effect of Rauwolfia root is primarily due to its active
compound called “reserpine”.
• Pharmacological activities of reserpine include: 1) reducing high blood pressure
2) sedative effect 3) induce sleep.
• Side effects of reserpine include: 1) decreased heart rate 2) dizziness 3)
drowsiness 4) stuffy nose.
The recommended dose of reserpine by the Thai FDA is not more than 50 mg
per dose.
Approaches to improve Ya Rayom Lom Soong formula and solve misuse problem
• Adjusting the dosage to take one capsule before meals, three times a day
(morning, noon, and evening), or as directed by the physician. (200 mg per
capsule with 50 mg of Rayom).
• Analysing the reserpine content: Dry Rayom root contains 0.1% w/w reserpine,
while Ya Rayom Lom Soong formula contains 0.024% w/w reserpine.
• Prescribing guideline: This medication should be prescribed to individuals with
blood pressure higher than 140/90 mm Hg.
Recommended dosage of Ya Rayom Lom Soong formula
1. Blood pressure 140-149/90-95 mm Hg, Take 1 capsule once a day before
meal.
2. Blood pressure 150-159/95-100 mm Hg, Take 1 capsule 2 times a day before
meals.

meals.
