9. Major challengers
I. Sri Lankan traditional medicine system has faced plenty of issues and challenges
related to the Sustainable provision of medicinal plants, Quality control,
Pharmacovigilance for TRM products, Essential TRM products, Intellectual
property rights, and the absence of a national adverse reporting system for
safety monitoring.
II. Progress relating to the regulation of herbal medicines is moving faster, while
the regulation of TM practice and practitioners is advancing at a slower
rate.
III. Lake of national and international standards for ensuring the safety efficacy
and quality control of TM therapies and products.
IV. Existence and continuing development of a mechanism and database to protect
traditional knowledge and associated genetic resources.
V. Existence of conservation and cultivation programmes to protect biodiversity
and endangered species of medicinal plants and non-plants.
10. Way forward
I. Integrated decision-making and monitoring system.
II. Build knowledge-based for active management of TM Medicine through
appropriate national policies.
III. Regulating TM medicine products, practices, and practitioners.
IV. Facilitate research, innovation, and collaborative research.
V. Promote universal health coverage by integrating TM medicine services into
health care service delivery.
