The Sri Lanka Ayurveda Medical Council is the licensing and regulatory body
for traditional medical practitioners (TMPs), Ayurveda/Siddha/Unani Practitioners,
Ayurveda Nurses, and Ayurveda Dispensers.
The Registration of Ayurvedic Physicians falls under two broad categories.
1. Registration of physicians who possess medical qualifications, laid down in
the Act or recognised by the Ayurvedic Medical Council. The physicians are registered
as “General practitioners” or “Special physicians”.
2. Registration of Paramparika (traditional) physicians. In order to give an
opportunity to physicians who have had no institutional training this scheme of registration
was initiated in 1956. The facility is still available though the original intention was to
restrict this for a limited period.
3.1 Regulatory system of TM professionals
According to Act makes provision for persons who are employed as Ayurveda
medical officers in government service to be granted registration during the period of
such employment. It makes provision for the registration of citizens of Sri Lanka who
have obtained a degree or diploma from a university/Institute outside Sri Lanka and
are recognised by the UGC. In addition, makes provision for the registration of medical
specialists and traditional medical practitioners.
Apart from that Act makes provisions to regulate the professionals who have
been registered with the Ayurveda medical council. Act No. 31 of 1961 makes provision
