Apart from that, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine (NITM) is the one
and only in-service educational & training institute in Sri Lanka funded by WHO in Sri
Lanka. This institute is conducting in-service training programmes for Traditional medical
practitioners, Government Ayurveda medical officers, other staff, and community-based
programmes.
8. National Research Institute:
The Bandaranaike Memorial Ayurveda Research Institute (BMARI) is the pioneering
Government Ayurveda Research Institute established in 1962 based on Section 33 (1)
of Ayurveda Act No. 31 of 1961.
The Institute Organisational structure:
I. Administration section - functions under the Director,
i. Deputy Director &
ii. Administrative Officer
II. Healthcare service division (OPD, wards & pharmacy)
III. Pharmaceutical botany division
IV. Pharmaceutical chemistry & medicinal drug quality control division
V. Literary research division
VL. Project division, and an Herbal Garden.
Sri-Lanka has not established the following regulatory and governing bodies
related to the research through TMS apart from the National ethic review committee in
BMARI.

iii. National clinical trial registry for traditional medicine
iv. National TM health governance strategy
v. National data deposit library
vi. Establishment of a research institute and hospital

viii. The reward system, the funding system
In addition, this institute does not have proper integration/partnership with
international/regional-level research institutes.
