4. Types of Traditional Medicine Services Provided and the
Coverage by Health Security System
Providing cost effective AYUSH services, with a universal access is one of the
strategies of the Government of India to improve the quality and outreach of Health of
Care Services.

i. Integration of Traditional Medicine in the National Health Care System
National Health Mission (NHM)initiated in 2005 has formulated
‘revitalising local health traditions and Mainstreaming of AYUSH’ at all
levels of service delivery as one of the strategies to strengthen the public
health services. Physical and functional integration of Ayush systems in
NHM is most important strategy of mainstreaming under NHM. Integration
is facilitated by appointing or co-locating Ayush doctors & supporting staff
and creating infrastructure according to local needs.
There are 810 District Hospitals (DHs), 5649 Community Health
Centres (CHCs) and 30813 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) in rural areas
in 705 districts, 4998 blocks and 664469 villages in India as on March,
2021. Ayush facilities have been co-located with 497 District Hospitals,
2806 Community Health Centres and 7557 Primary Health Centres in the
T raditional Medicine Systems of BIMSTEC Member States – 2023 Report
country as on 31.03.2021. Ayush facilities have also been co-located with
457 ‘Other than CHC or above block level but below district level health
facilities’ and with 4023 ‘other health facilities above Sub Centres (SC) but
below block level’.
ii. Integration in National Health Programmes: Ministry of Ayush in
collaboration with Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health
& Family Welfare has implemented National Programme for Prevention and
Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS)
for health promotion, prevention and management of Non-communicable
diseases or Lifestyle related disorders through its three research councils,
namely, Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS),
Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) and Central
Council for Research in Homoeopathy(CCRH)in various districts across the
country.
