3. National Office/Authority in Traditional Medicine
Health Governance in India is delivered through two independent Ministry’s viz.,
Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Ministry of Ayush .
Earlier, the Department of Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy (ISM&H)
was established in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in 1995. It was then
renamed as the Department of Ayurveda, Yoga, and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and
Homoeopathy (Ayush) in November 2003.
The Ministry of Ayush was formed on the 9th of November 2014 with a vision
of reviving the profound knowledge of our ancient systems of medicine. The Ministry
is responsible for policy formulation, development and implementation of programmes
for the growth, development and propagation of Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani,
Siddha, Sowa Rigpa and Homoeopathy systems of healthcare.
The Ministry has five Research Councils, 12 National Institutes, two Statutory
Regulatory Commissions for Education, one regulatory organisation for Pharmacopoeia
matters, one Public Sector Undertaking and a National Medicinal Plants Board under
its administrative fold.
