(2) University System.
There are two types of universities operating under this education system:
• Universities offering a four-year bachelor’s degree programme in Thai
traditional medicine (Bachelor of Thai Traditional Medicine, B. TM.)
• Universities offering a four-year bachelor’s degree programme in applied
Thai traditional medicine (Bachelor of Applied Thai Traditional Medicine,
B. ATM.).
Currently, there are 24 and 11 universities offering B.TM. and B.ATM. programme,
respectively.
TCM educational system
TCM education in Thailand is under university system only and Bachelor’s degree
in TCM curriculum takes 6 years. Universities offering Bachelor’s degree programme in
TCM have to be accredited by both the Profession Commission in the Branch of TCM
and the Office of the Higher Education Commission. At present, there are 9 universities
in Thailand and 31 universities in China that have been accredited by the Profession
Commission in the Branch of TCM. So far until 2023, the Profession Commission in
the Branch of TCM have issued licence to 1,956 TCM doctors.
In addition, DTAM and the Royal Thai Army Medical Department, Ministry of
Defence in collaboration with TCM universities in China also offer “Three-Month
Acupuncture and Moxibustion Training Course” annually for medical doctors so that
they can give acupuncture therapy for their patients, esp. in hospitals with no TCM
doctors. As of June 2023, 2,159 medical doctors have finished in this training course.
7. Regulatory system of TM professionals.
According to the Thai Traditional Medical Professions Act B.E. 2556 (2013), the
Thai Traditional Medical Council (TTMC) regulates both the practice and the training
system of the TTM profession. The TTMC is responsible for certifying curricula and
schools of TTM and applied Thai traditional medicine (ATTM), establishing and regulating
TTM practices, registering and issuing licences for TTM and ATTM practitioners, and
enforcing professional ethics in the conduct of TTM and ATTM practitioners. TTMC has
therefore issued several regulations and acts related to the practice of Thai Traditional Thailand
Medicine.
